Planning Your Trip

The trip you make to where your family came from is a pilgrimage, the journey of a lifetime. It can be an emotional and moving experience to get back in touch with where you came from: by uncovering your past you can discover yourself. In the Hebrides, time stands still and you can really get a feeling for what life was like for your ancestors be it decades or hundreds of years ago.

From other peoples’ experience, it seems that the more research you can gather before your pilgrimage, the better: read the tips in our Research Tips & Resources section. By having as much research done before you come to the islands you will get more out of your trip: you will spend less time going through records and more time visiting the family crofts and perhaps long lost relatives!

If you would prefer for somebody else to take the stress out of planning your perfect holiday, and think you need some local expertise, link to Package Holidays. Its never been easier to reach these islands on the edge of the Atlantic, we are closer than you think!

Here on the RootsHebrides site we can help you with information on how to get here, when to come, what to see and do and who to speak to (click on the buttons to the right)!! If you need any additional help, please don’t hesitate to e-mail.
